5th International
Art Festival
‘Chania 2007”
15 to 22 July
at
the Old Customs Building
at the
Venetian Harbour of Chania
We are delighted to present, for the fifth consecutive
year, the 5th International festival “Chania 2007”.
The first Festival opened just days after
the launching of the war in Iraq, an event that shook and alarmed us deeply. In
response, we dedicated that Festival to the cause of peace, which we have
continued to do each succeeding year.
This year, over five years later, as the
slaughter in Iraq and elsewhere rages on, and as peaceful coexistence between
peoples of different cultures becomes increasingly threatened, there is an ever
greater need for events and institutions that unite different peoples and
promote tolerance and mutual respect and appreciation. Art undoubtedly brings
people together, and both provokes serious thought and
brings beauty into our lives. Wherever people live, they have the same
concerns, the same problems, they feel the same pains
and joys.
Through the creations of artists, these
emotions take on material form.
In this Festival 36 artists from 16
countries, take part. Beyond the social or political significance of such events,
there is also the more purely artistic aspect. We believe that the Chania International Art Festival has become established as
an event that presents noteworthy and fresh work of both new and well-known
artists from all over the world, presenting the latest tendencies in an
extremely wide range of genres, styles and media. In a way, it is a portrait of
the visual arts at this moment.
We hope that the visitors to the Festival will gain as much pleasure from these works as we did.
